Shrine of Hazrat Sakhi Sultan Bahoo

Sultan Bahoo’s shrine relocated twice due to change of direction of river Chenab. The address of present day shrine is:

Village Sultan Bahoo via Garh Maharaja, Tehsil Ahmadpur Sial, district Jhang, Pakistan.

First Shrine

Location

Fort Qehrgan at the western bank of river Chenab, Shorkot, Pakistan.

Time Period

This shrine was his resting place for seventy eight years. From 1102 H till 1180 H (1691 AD-1767 AD).

Abandoned

When Jhanda Singh and Ganda Singh captured Lahore, descendants of Sultan Bahoo migrated to different parts of Punjab. Only a few Dervishes and spiritual successors stayed at the shrine.

Reason to Shift Shrine to a New Location

In 1180 H (1767 AD), river Chenab sank down the fort which fell afterwards. Later the river reached the graves. Dervishes and spiritual successors therefore took out other coffins and saved them in boxes.

Miracle

No one was able to find Sultan Bahoo’s coffin. Meanwhile Dervishes and junior spiritual successors started crying in disappointment. Sultan Bahoo spiritually told them:

“My coffin will surely be found. A man who is worthy to touch my body will come tomorrow morning at sunrise. Then he will take out my coffin. Until then river water will not reach my grave.”

Dervishes were now satisfied and they started waiting for this miracle to happen. Next morning, a man with green veil came at the fixed time. He did not remove the veil. Instantly he took out the coffin of Sultan Bahoo from the ground dug by the Dervishes and spiritual successors.

Consequently thousands of people gathered around and had the privilege of seeing the sacred body of Sultan Bahoo. It was as fresh as alive, water of ablution was dropping from his sacred beard. When they open the coffin, fragrance spread through miles. A lot of people present there became spiritually ecstatic and went into trance.

Who was the Man in Veil?

Once, while conversing about the incident, Sultan-ul-Faqr VI Sultan Mohammad Asghar Ali told Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman:

“That person in veil was Sultan Bahoo himself.”

Second Shrine

Location

In Samundri, a town near river Chenab, there was a mansion near the well. People fainted when they entered the mansion. Even the cattle and other animals could not enter it. Therefore people had left the area out of fear. While in reality the mansion was sacred. Sultan Bahoo ordered his spiritual successors to construct his shrine in the mansion near the well. As that place was near the old shrine. Uniquely it was spiritually pre-decided as the place of new shrine. Thus, the Dervishes built his shrine in the centre of the mansion. The coffin was not buried instead it was placed on the ground and construction of shrine spread around that area.

Time Period

However it stayed Sultan Bahoo’s resting place for 157 years. From 1180 H till 1336 H (1767 AD-1917 AD).

Reason to Change Location Again

According to the predictions of Sultan Bahoo, the water of river Chenab once again came close to the shrine. It was the year 1336 H.

Where was his Coffin?

At that time Sultan Haji Noor Ahmad was the caretaker. Dervishes living at the shrine tried to take out the coffin of Sultan Bahoo from his grave. As a result they found coffins of all the descendants of Sultan Bahoo buried around. Yet again the coffin of Sultan Bahoo was nowhere to be located despite much effort.

However, since Allah has sent Sultan Bahoo as the benefactor for every age, for every Muslim and non-Muslim, fortunate and unfortunate, and also as the true successor and representative of Prophet Mohammad in this materialistic age to guide the people on the right path, so his shrine had to be saved. That temporary concealment was due to some hidden wisdom.

Now Sultan Bahoo visited Sultan Dost Mohammad in dream and advised him to dig the place of the grave deeper. When the next day they dug the said place, the signs of coffin started appearing. Once the earth was dug deeper, gusts of fragrance spread in the air. That fragrance was out of the world. At last they found the coffin of Sultan Bahoo. It had become impossible to stay there due to the extreme fragrance. Therefore no one could stay inside the shrine for more than fifteen minutes. The coffin was taken out with much difficulty. The fragrance was so lasting that it did not leave the dresses of those workers even when the dresses got old and torn.

Present Day Shrine

Dispute as to Rightful Heir of Shrine

Mohammad Muneeb Sultan: He was the son of Sultan Ghulam Jilani, the ninth shrine caretaker. Now his father appointed him as his successor and the caretaker of the shrine of Sultan Bahoo. The entire family was present on the occasion. After the death of Sultan Ghulam Jilani on 20th Dec, 2001 (4 Shawwal-1422 H) many members of the family claimed the seat of shrine caretaker. It was because Mohammad Muneeb Sultan was very young. As well as he was the middle son of Sultan Ghulam Jilani. His mother also did not belong to the family of Sultan Bahoo. The matter worsened to the extent that the law enforcing institutions had to interfere. Hence the matter taken to the High Court.

The Lahore High Court issued order to the District and Session Judge of Jhang to take the management of the shrine under his control with the help of a committee.  As a result the District and Session Judge made a committee. As the shrine is still under the supervision of court committee. For all the claims are under consideration. Yet the caretaker of shrine is still not decided.
