Virtues of Mohammadan Umma

Mohammadan umma is the best among all ummas because Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) is the best and most distinguished among all Prophets. Umma is an Arabic word which is used for a community or group of people who have something in common. That could be the religion, area, span of time etc.

The Concept of umma in Islam

Al-Husayn ibn Mohammad Raghib al-Isfahani said:

The umma refers to every group that has one thing in common or has a common affair. It could be a common religion or a common time and space. Moreover, their common cause could be optional or impulsive. The plural of umma is umam.

Allah Almighty has sent His messengers towards a number of nations. Each of them is their Prophet’s umma whether they responded positively or not However, there are two categories of people in an umma; the umma of invitation (Umma al-Da‘wah) and the umma of response (Umma al-Ijabah). Umma al-Ijabah are those who embraced Islam and others fall in the second category.

You must know that a nation follows its leader. So a true Muslim is the one who follows Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) completely and reaches the Mohammadan assembly by following each of his step.

Allah has created many ummas and by His wisdom and justice, He has given superiority to some over others. However, the umma of the Holy Prophet has superiority over all ummas. If one looks into the matter through esoteric eye he would say that all the characteristics of the Mohammadan umma are praise worthy, but it’s most distinguished characteristic is that this is the umma of Allah’s beloved. If the Prophet of this umma is the best and most distinguished among all the prophets, then why should his umma not be the best and most distinguished among all ummas? This one virtue alone is enough to make this umma superior over all the previous ummas.

Virtues of Prophet’s Umma

The Most Distinguished Umma

It is a known fact that Bani Israel was the best umma of its time. Allah had blessed them with many religious and worldly blessings. Those were not available to other communities but they were ungrateful about it.

:Allah Almighty says

Meaning: O Children of Ya‘qub (Jacob)! Remember My favour that I bestowed upon you. And (especially) the supremacy which I awarded you over all the communities (of that age).

Al Quran

[2:122]

Before Mohammadan umma, Bani Israel were the best umma, but they lost this honour due to their disobedience. So Allah gave the title of ‘the best umma’ to Mohammadan umma.

:Allah says

Meaning: You are the best umma brought forth for (the guidance of) mankind. You enjoin righteousness, forbid evil and believe in Allah. Had the People of the Book also embraced faith, that would certainly have been in their favour. There are some amongst them who believe, whilst the majority of them are disobedient.

Al Quran

[3:110]

Hadith

Ali ibn Abi Talib (ra) narrates that the Holy Prophet (pbuh) said:

“I have been honoured with many exclusive merits that were not given to any prophet.”

We asked: ‘O Messenger of Allah!  Which ones are they?”

The Prophet of Allah replied: “I have been helped with Divine favour, I have been given the keys of the Earth, I have been named Ahmad, the soil has been made a purifier for me and my umma (granting of permission to perform tayammum in the absence of water) and  my umma has been made the best and most superior.” (Musnad Ahmad: 991)

Mohammadan umma is not limited to people belonging to a specific nation, lineage or country etc. Rather they are present all over the world. Allah has brought forth this umma for the guidance of mankind. So they should pay more attention to this duty.

Prophet Abraham’s Salutations for Mohammadan Umma

Abdullah ibn Masud relates that the Holy Prophet (pbuh) said:

I met Prophet Abraham on the Night of Ascension and he said to me: “O Mohammad, convey my greetings to your umma, and tell them that Paradise has pure soil and sweet water. It is a vast plain land and its seedlings are: Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, there is no God but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.”

Glory be to Allah! Prophet Abraham, the friend of Allah, not only sent greetings for Mohammadan umma but also informed them of the ways to obtain the blessings of Paradise.

The meaning of Prophet Abraham’s saying is that even though heaven has everything and so many blessings in it, but for one who is devoid of action, heaven is merely a vast plain. This is because he will not be able to benefit from those blessings. Thus, paradise is like a fertile land and there is sweet water near it, with which the land can be well irrigated to produce the best grain. However, a person will reap whatever he sows.

virtues of mohammadan umma

Allah Almighty has Granted Easy Religion to Mohammadan umma

It is a great favour of Allah that He removed all the burdens from Mohammadan umma which He placed on other ummas. This is due to the beloved Prophet of Allah to whom He has sent as a mercy for the whole world in general and for his umma in particular.

Allah Almighty says:

Meaning: He has chosen you, and has not laid upon you any hardship or constriction (in the matter of) Deen (Religion). This is the Deen (Religion) of your father Ibrahim (Abraham). [22:78]

Some of the burdens removed from Mohammadan umma are;

  • During travel, the prayer has been shortened.
  • The patients are allowed to offer prayer while sitting or lying down.
  • Allah has allowed Mohammadan umma to do tayammum when clean water is not available to them as an alternative to ablution.
  • Allah has kept the door of repentance open for every umma. For Mohammadan umma, method of repentance is quite easy as compared to other ummas.

Blessings of Friday

Allah, in His infinite wisdom, has bestowed special significance to Friday. There is a time on Friday during which Allah accepts supplications.

Abu Hurairah reported that the Holy Prophet said while talking about Friday:

“There is a time in it (i.e. Friday) at which Allah grants the request of any Muslim who, at this time, happens to be asking Allah for something while standing in Prayer.” The Prophet (pbuh) pointed with his hand to indicate that this period of time is very short. (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Complete Religion

Allah has also given the honour to Mohammadan umma that He has granted them a complete religion. Neither is there any deficiency in this religion nor room for any additions in it. This religion is a complete code of life till the Day of Judgment.

Allah Almighty says:

Meaning: Today I have perfected your Deen (Religion) for you, and have completed My Blessing upon you, and have chosen for you Islam (as) Deen (a complete code of life).
[5:3]

Abdullah ibn Abbas (ra) says that in this verse religion means Islam. By revealing this verse, Allah has informed His Prophet and the believers that Allah has completed faith for them. Now there is no room for increase in it, nor can there be any decrease in it, Allah has completed it.

Protection of the Holy Quran

Allah Almighty has taken responsibility for the protection of the Holy Quran and the matters that help in understanding this book.

As Allah says:

Meaning: Assuredly, We alone have revealed this Glorious Admonition (the Qur’an), and surely We alone will guard it. [15:9]

Allah has preserved the Holy Quran both verbally and semantically. However, this privilege is not for any other prophet and umma.

Mohammadan Umma Bear Witness to People

Allah Almighty says:

Meaning: And, in the same way, (O Muslims,) We made you the best Umma (Community—fair to all with a tolerant, moderate and balanced outlook) so that you may bear witness to the people, and (Our exalted) Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him) bears witness to you. [2:143]

Hadith

Abu Saeed al-Khudri (ra) narrated that the Holy Prophet said:

“Noah and his nation will come (on the Day of Resurrection and Allah will ask (Noah), ‘Did you convey (the Message)?’

He will reply, ‘Yes, O my Lord!’

Then Allah will ask Noah’s nation, ‘Did Noah convey My Message to you?’

They will reply, ‘No, no prophet came to us.’

Then Allah will ask Noah, ‘Who will stand a witness for you?’

He will reply, ‘Mohammad and his followers (will stand witness for me).’

So, I and my followers will stand as witnesses for him (that he conveyed Allah’s Message).” (Sahih Bukhari: 3339)

It is narrated in some traditions that like Noah (as) the ummas of other Prophets will also deny the preaching of their prophets. Then their Prophets will say that we preached to them and the Mohammadan umma will testify in favour of the Prophets. Then Allah will ask them how you came to know about it. They will answer that we came to know about it through our beloved Prophet (pbuh). Then the Holy Prophet will bear witness to the righteousness and just of his umma.

A Special Recognition of Mohammadan Umma on the Day of Judgment

Abu Darda (ra) narrates that the Holy Prophet (pbuh) said:

“On the Day of Judgement first of all, I will be allowed to bow (prostrate) before Allah. And I will be given permission to raise my head first. When I look at people I will recognise my umma first from my right side, from my left, from my back and in front of me.” Someone asked: How will you identify your umma since there are a lot of nations from Noah to you? The Holy Prophet said: “Their hands, face and foreheads will be glittering because of ablution. There will be no one like them. I will also recognise them because their report card will be given to them in their right hand. I will also identify them because their offsprings will be running and playing in front of them.” (Mishkat – 299)

Prophet Isa (AS)  Specially Praised Mohammadan Umma

Al-Layth ibn Saʿd (ra) narrated that Prophet Isa (AS) said:

  • “The deeds of Mohammadan umma will be heavier than all the people in the scales on the Day of Judgement, because as compared to other nations they used to recite La illaha ill’Allah (there is no god but Allah).

Angels Admire Mohammadan Umma

Abu Hurairah (RA) narrates that the Holy Prophet said:

  • Allah the Almighty recited sura Taha and sura Yasin 1000 years ago before the creation of the earth and the sky. When the angels heard it they began saying: “Glad tiding is for those people unto whom these surahs will be revealed. Good news is for the blessed hearts which will memorize them. Good news is for those who will recite them.” (Mishkat: 2148)

A Mujaddid Will Appear at the Turn of Every Century

Another important virtue of Mohammadan umma is that its religion will exist till the end of this universe. That is why, whenever evil forces tried to weaken this religion, and started introducing innovations and polytheism, then at the beginning or at the end of every century Allah, the Exalted, raised a man who instilled the true spirit of faith in the people, taught them the correct interpretation of Quran and Hadith and clarified their misconceptions. This will continue to happen till the last day. No other nation has such privileges.

Centuries before the arrival of Prophet Mohammad, the teachings of Isa the son of Maryam (AS) had been limited to a few people. There were millions of people in the world who had not even heard anything about the teachings of Isa (AS). On the contrary, after the declaration of prophethood of the Holy Prophet, the followers of his true teachings are ever increasing despite a million obstacles.

Hadith

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Holy Prophet said:

Allah will raise for this umma at the end of every hundred years the one who will revive its religion for it.

Abu Dawood

(4291)

Hadith

Abu Hurairah relates that the Holy Prophet said:

Prophets ruled over Banu Israel. When one Prophet died, another succeeded him; but after me there is no prophet and there will be caliphs and they will be quite large in number.” The Companions asked: “What do you order us to do (in case we come to have more than one Caliph)?” He said: “The one to whom allegiance is sworn first has a supremacy over the others. Concede to them their due rights (i.e. obey them). Allah (Himself) will question them about the subjects whom He had entrusted to them.

Sahih Muslim

Other Virtues of Mohammadan Umma

  • One of the virtues of this umma is that the sharia of the Holy Prophet (pbuh) is comprehensive of all laws and the Prophet Mohammad himself is comprehensive of all the attributes of all Prophets.
  • Mohammadan umma is the last umma, the evil doings of the previous ummas were described in the Holy Quran, but after this umma no new prophet will come, nor is there a heavenly book in which the wrong doings of this umma are described, hence, Allah has covered up this umma. In the previously revealed books, only the good qualities of Mohammadan umma were mentioned, due to which they aspired to be in this umma.
  • Their exoteric selves will be enlightened by sharia and their inwards by gnosis of Allah and mysticism.
  • Mohammadan umma will be the first to enter heaven and will be the most numerous.

Hadiths

Ibn Buraidah narrated from his father that the Holy Prophet (pbuh) said:

  • The people of Paradise are a hundred and twenty rows, eighty of them are from this nation, and forty are from the rest of the nations. (Tirmidhi: 2546)

Samura ibn Jundab (ra) narrated the Holy Prophet said:

  • Indeed there is a Hawd for every Prophet, and indeed they compete to see which of them has the most arriving at it. Indeed I hope that mine will be the one with the most arrival. (Tirmidhi: 2443)

Acceptance of Intercession

Allah will forgive major sins of the Mohammadan umma and will accept intercession in its favour.

Anas bin Malik (ra) narrated that the Holy Prophet (pbuh) said:

  • My intercession is for the people who committed the major sins in my umma. (Tirmidhi: 2435)

Concluding Words

Allah Almighty has bestowed us His great blessing of religion Islam. He has made us the most distinguished and the best nation amongst all nations and has blessed us with numerous virtues. We should be thankful to Allah Almighty for all these favours because it is only a Divine grace that we are the umma of Prophet Mohammad, no one has any kind of authority in it, nor is it the result of any kind of power and force.

Allah says in the Holy Quran:

وَ رَبُّکَ یَخۡلُقُ مَا یَشَآءُ وَ یَخۡتَارُ ؕ مَا کَانَ لَہُمُ الۡخِیَرَۃُ ؕ سُبۡحٰنَ اللّٰہِ  وَ تَعٰلٰی عَمَّا یُشۡرِکُوۡنَ ﴿۶۸﴾‏

Meaning: And your Lord creates whatever He wills and chooses (whom He pleases for prophethood and for the right of intercession). These (disbelievers and polytheists) have no authority or choice (in this matter). Holy is Allah the Glorious and Exalted, far above (the false gods) that they associate as partners (with Allah)! [28:68]

We pray to Allah to make us the umma of the Holy Prophet in the true sense. May Allah and His Prophet be pleased with us and bless us with the blessing of steadfastness on the path of truth. Ameen
